How to win · Pop-Up Croc
Press a sword, share the suspense.
Pop-Up Croc is a short, honest hidden-trigger game for exactly two players. Every live sword is equally likely, so there is no secret pattern to crack—only fair odds, a clean turn and the fun of not knowing when the friendly croc will pop.

Know the round
The rules are delightfully small
Exactly two players share 16 numbered sword slots. The round seed chooses one hidden trigger with even distribution and chooses the starting player. On a turn, the active player presses one unpressed slot.
- Safe slot. It locks visibly and passes the turn to the other player.
- Trigger slot. The friendly croc pops immediately and the selecting player wins.
- No draw. One trigger is among 16 finite slots, so legal play ends by the 16th press at the latest.
- Fresh replay. Replay uses a fresh seed and trigger, and swaps the starting player.
Read the odds honestly
There is no skill pattern to find
Previous safe presses and past rounds do not reveal the trigger. With R live slots, every individual live slot is 1/R. The current player receives ceil(R/2) potential turns if all earlier picks are safe, while the other player receives floor(R/2).

Make the turn fair
Choose any live slot, then hand over cleanly
Because every live slot is equally likely, the useful skill is fair play: press one unpressed slot, let the safe state lock, and pass the device without suggesting a pattern. Do not imply that a corner, number or “cold” sword is safer.
Keep the tension playful with a countdown, a silly prediction or a shared reveal—but never with hidden information. The seed and trigger stay private to the reducer until a legal press resolves them.
Leaving an unfinished round awards nothing. A completed round credits exactly one head-to-head win to the player who selected the trigger.
Keep the myth out
Common myths and mistakes
- “That slot is due.” Previous safe presses do not make a particular live slot more likely.
- “The same number worked last round.” Replay uses a fresh seed and trigger, so history gives no clue.
- Pressing twice quickly. Only the active player’s first legal unpressed slot action counts.
- Calling a draw. There is no draw; the sixteenth legal press must resolve the trigger at the latest.
- Blaming a fair result. Luck chooses the trigger, while clean hand-offs keep the tension friendly.
